Why?

So I finally decided to homeschool!! Am I nervous?? YES.

Where do I start......I decided to document my first year of homeschooling for myself and my son to look back on.
I have been thinking about homeschooling for a really long time now, I have talked about it and talked about it and finally decided to pull the trigger. There are many reasons I decided to try homeschooling.
I had my son signed up for a great charter school in Las Vegas and then we had to move for my husbands job to Reno. As I went to sign him up for the public school in Reno I quickly learned that it was full day kindergarten. My heart broke! I wasn't ready to have my son go to school all day! I decided that it will be ok, I will volunteer. So that is what I did. Three times a week. I love being involved and knowing exactly what he is learning so that I could make sure he understood it and was at the top of his class. We of course had a few issues like mean kids on the play ground and the biggest one...the dreaded peanut allergy. My son has a severe allergy to peanuts and the school system really doesn't do anything for these kids. I could go on and on about this issue but I won't. Just know that if your kid had an allergy in the public school system they don't care! They say they care but look into it, you will be sadly disappointed.
First grade comes along and I had my daughter and I also quickly find out that the school system doesn't allow you to bring your kids to volunteer.  We have the same issues, mean/disruptive kids and allergies. Plus my son is very shy and doesn't speak up for himself so this makes the issues worse.
We move back to Vegas for the second semester and I make sure to put him in a highly rated public school. That is one of the reasons we live where we live. Same issues mean/disruptive kids and allergies, along with me not being able to volunteer. I was able to find a great friend to trade babysitting with me so that I could volunteer one day a week for an hour. I hate the fact that as parents we have no control over what is said and taught to our children. They test them at the beginning of the year, placed in groups and that is that. They barely get any one on one with the teachers. I have also noticed that the slower kids get all the attention. (Which I get why) but then again I don't. Shouldn't we be pushing the smart kids just as much as the slow kids to see how far they can go???
As the first grade year went by I thought to myself and my husband...what are our options. He's already in a highly rated public school, Most charter schools teacher ratio is 25:1 plus still all the same issues and public. Lets face it, charters are still funded by the government. Then there is private schools. Either they are outrageously expensive or they are religious. While I believe in a greater/higher power, I might just not believe exactly what you do.
So then there comes homeschooling. As I was doing my research I found out so many amazing stories and I am shocked at how many people homeschool! I defiantly know it has a stigma. Unsocialized kids and weirdo's. Haha, but so far it hasn't been like that.  My husband and I went back and forth a hundred times about why we shouldn't do it or why we should do it and finally decided we are doing it. We talked to our son about it to make sure it was something he wanted to do and he was excited. Of course he said he will miss his school friends but he will make new homeschool friends.
We decided to try it for a year and see how it goes! If it goes bad, well then public school here we come and we will deal with it. I honestly can say that we are so excited to try it out and have fun with it. Here's hoping to success!!!
